A Jasper County deputy was injured Monday night when he responded to a call of intoxicated pedestrians on Pennington Road in North Jasper County.

Deputy Carlos Rhodes responded to the call to find two male Hispanics walking along the road. Their truck which was a ways up the road had a flat tire. When confronted, one of the men, Martin Cervantes became combative, according to Sheriff Charles Roper.

Apparently, while Deputy Rhodes and Mr. Cervantes were struggling, a vehicle came down the dark, country road. The driver of the vehicle saw the suspect who was already handcuffed on the side of the road and swerved to miss him, and instead hit the deputy and Mr. Cervantes who were on the other shoulder.

The deputy managed to key his radio and let emergency officials know that there was an officer down. The truck stopped immediately and the two men in the truck attempted to render aid.

The Emergency Medical Service, deputies and first responders immediately responded, with another deputy arriving in just minutes. Both men were flown to Atlanta Medical Center.

The ever-popular subject of roads took up much of Monday’s county commission meeting, since the group had scheduled a one-hour work session on roads from 9 to 10 a.m., then agreed to have another one-hour work session on dirt roads at its next meeting, March 19.

Originally, the recreation commission was scheduled to be the topic at that work session, but the commissioners agreed that the dirt road plan is more important.

At Monday’s meeting the commissioners discussed how to best allocate the $204,111 that will remain from the 2005 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). Of the roads originally publicized to be on that list, Deerfield Farms and Post Roads remain untouched with SPLOST funds.

Commissioners had agreed some time ago that they would not attempt to triple-surface all of Deerfield Farms Road, just the area where there is a concentration of population.

Commissioners discussed how long the area on Deerfield Farms is, and no one knew. Commission Chairman Alan Cox asked if the county engineer had looked at the road.

Commissioners talked about doing reclamation on each side of the bridges on Post Road, the worst area on the road, which is estimated to cost about $125,000. County Manager Greg Wood said that the approaches to the bridges are where the worst patching is.

By the time Jasper County Primary School second grade teacher Ginny Spurlock gets her students each year some of them have had some form of education for up to five years, but may lack interest in education and how it relates to their lives.

In her 17 years at JCPS, Mrs. Spurlock has used her creativity and imagination to help hundreds of students come alive and find their own creativity and interests. She is cultivating these students for whatever life gives them in the future. But just how was Ginny Spurlock cultivated?

A Valdosta native, Ginny, said she was motivated by her father, Fred Sorrells, who instilled in her the love of learning and life. Her father wanted to be a doctor, but did not get to finish his education as the Depression put an end to his dream when he had to help support his family.

With his enthusiasm for curiosity, he taught her the joys of thinking, questioning, and seeking answers. “I promised my father I would finish college, and I would use that knowledge to help open doors for others.”
